Running along the lake in the beautiful green summer
With the arrival of the cherry blossom front, a typical spring event, eastern Hokkaido is finally entering the season of fresh greenery.
On the shores of Lake Kussharo, the second half of May is called the “green season,” when all kinds of plants begin to bud, and as the days pass, the green becomes more beautiful and deepens.
Hokkaido Route 52 Kussharo Mashu Lakeside Line, which runs along the lakeside from TAPKOP, is, as the name suggests, a major road that allows you to visit two lakes. Many of our guests travel this route before or after their stay.
In the summer, when the trees on both sides of the road are thick, you can see the lake from time to time as you go through the green tunnel.
A virgin forest spreads out right next to you, and its depth will refresh your soul.
Along the way, be on the lookout for encounters with sika deer, red foxes, and squirrels.
The powerful fumarole of the active volcano Atosanupuri, which is also a volcano that can be observed at all times.
From Mashu No. 3 Observation Deck, you can see Atosanupuri and Lake Kussharo standing behind it.
Due to the winter road closure, you can only visit this place from around the end of April until the beginning of November.
The road continues to an observation deck where you can see Lake Kussharo, Atosanupuri (Mount Sulfur), and Lake Mashu, which are scenic spots representative of Akan-Mashu National Park.
Along the way, you might want to try some ice cream made with locally produced milk or Mashu soba, which is rarely distributed and is said to be a miracle.
About 55km from TAPKOP. How about taking a trip around Lake Kussharo and Lake Mashu, two expressive caldera lakes, and the active volcano Atosanupuri during your stay?
